But there is also pointed writing not just about politics but about subways and orgasms and woolly underwear and air conditioning and retirement homes. This is a baggy book, with room for everything Menasse wants to put into it. ![]() ![]() Yet The Capital made me want to learn to read in German, where it is surely even better. The translation, by Jamie Bulloch, is adroit. It’s possible this is a great Holocaust-minded novel for a new millennium. I enjoyed The Capital so much that I could keep going like this. You come to suspect that the murder is a kind of MacGuffin, that maybe it doesn’t matter at all. ![]() It’s an unusual murder story, though, because the suspense lies not in discovering the identity of the assassin (we follow him as he goes on the lam) but the identity of the dead man. Perhaps what we have in The Capital is a great murder mystery. If you tasked an excellent writer with turning a tall stack of recent issues of The Economist into a novel, you might get The Capital. ![]()

Dull![]() ![]() More like a day and a half since I spent the first day shoveling snow. You are an amazing writer! I literally read this book in two days. There are two reasons this book is not getting 5 stars. The narration style was easier to get in to and I loved the mini vignettes that told parts of the history of the vampires. My first though is that it was exorbitantly better than the first book, Solstice. I look forward to reading more, and soon! Once again, amazing job, Bryan. Vampires and ghosts, twists and turns, horror, and a whole lot of gripping the edge of your seat will leave you impatiently reading just to find out what happens next!!! I am impressed with how Solstice has grown throughout the first and second books. BUT if you are looking for something different, something that stands out from the norm, check out both these books! I will have a much better review once I finish reading the rest of "Equinox"! If you are looking for that, it's not here. A plain little girl is not going to fall for the big strong vampire that glitters. Though sometimes a bit comical, he is her protector, and would do anything to keep her out of harm's way. Solstice and Gavin have a chemistry between them. ![]() Yes, extreme is the only word that comes to mind. However, after only reading "Solstice" and a few chapters of "Equinox", I have to say, I am intrigued. I would be lying if I said I did not enjoy it. I will admit, I fell under the "Twilight" spell. ![]() 6/6/2023 0 Comments Lowborn kerry hudson![]() ![]() ![]() She revisits the towns she grew up in to try to discover what being poor really means in Britain today and whether anything has changed. To begin with, seeing the story through the eyes of the narrator, Nina, was like looking through whatever the opposite of rose-tinted glasses is. But the overall message, and main takeaway, was ‘modern dating is shit’ – and despite an attempt at a happy ending, this novel left a pessimistic taste in my mouth. Yes, there were funny moments, lovable characters to root for, relatability by the bucketload. It promised ‘whip-smart observations about relationships, family, memory, and how we live now.’ What it presented – to me, a 21-year-old female reader – was a thoroughly depressing vision of the future. The above line was the most heartbreakingly depressing moment in Dolly Alderton’s first novel, Ghosts. ‘When will this all end?
